Child Find Information and Process
Cheyenne Mountain School District is responsible for identifying and assessing children who may have educational disabilities ages birth to age 21. For the birth to three population, once identified, assessed and found eligible, the district works with community agencies in the development of an Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP). The plan links families with various community services. When the child turns two and a half, a transition meeting occurs in which the IFSP is turned into an Individual Education Program (IEP) if the student continues to be eligible for services. If the student is found eligible, the IEP team determines appropriate services and the school district is responsible for ensuring a Free Appropriate Public Education for the student. Students ages three through five are assessed by the Child Find Team.
Students, ages five to 21 are screened for vision, hearing and health concerns as part of the Child Find process. The district has a Response to Intervention process in each building which monitor children's learning and recommend that the teacher implement a variety of interventions. If the team feels that a referral to special education is warranted, an evaluation to include cognitive, educational, health, social/emotional, communication and transition occurs with parental permission. Parents who suspect that their child is experiencing learning difficulties may also initiate a special education referral. An Individual Education Plan (IEP) is developed delineating a student's strengths and needs and determining eligibility for special education.
