Curriculum

The Learn-to-Swim curriculum is designed to cover skills in a logical progression for optimal development.  Each stage is challenging, but individualized so students gain confidence in their own abilities.  Class sizes range from 4 to 10 individuals per instructor.  All lessons are 30 minutes in length.

TIPS: Class availability is not posted until the Friday prior to registration.  For lessons, arrive promptly and prepared to swim.  Know your instructor’s name.  Take the time to evaluate the program and instructor.  Practice makes perfect!

4 - 5 Year Old Classes

NOTE:  The skills listed are the required exit skills assessment given to the students at the end of the session.  If a child can complete the listed skills, they should be placed in the next level.

PRESCHOOL 1.  Enter the water independently, using either the ladder or side of pool, travel at least 5 yards, submerge to moth and blow bubbles for 3 seconds and exit the water. Assisted front/back floats, retrieve submerged objects, front/back glides, body rolls, arm/leg motions and basic water safety rules. All skills performed with assistance.

PRESCHOOL 2.  Glide on front at least 2 body lengths, roll to back, float on back for 15 seconds, then recover to vertical position. Glide on back for at least 2 body lengths, roll to front, then recover to vertical position. Swim using combined arm and leg actions on front for at least 3 body lengths, roll to back, float for 15 seconds, roll to front, then continue swimming on front for at least 3 body lengths.

PRESCHOOL 3.  All skills are done unassisted.  Step from the side into chest deep water, push off the bottom, move into a treading or floating position for 15 seconds, swim on front and / or back  for 5 body lengths, then exit water.

 

6 Years and Older Classes

NOTE:  The skills listed are those taught during a session.  If a child can complete the listed skills, they should be placed in the next level.

Level 1.    Enter/exit water independently, travel at least 5 yards, bob 5 times and retrieve object. Glide on front/back at least 2 body lengths, roll to a back float for 5 seconds with a recovery to vertical position. Skills performed with assistance.

Level 2.  Step into chest deep water, tread water or float for at least 15 seconds, swim on front / back for 5 body lengths then exit the water.  Some skills performed with assistance.

Level 3.  Jump into deep water from side, tread water or float for 1 minute, rotate one full turn to level off and swim front crawl  and/or elementary backstroke for 25 yards then exit the water.   Push off in a streamlined position, then swim front crawl for 15 yards, change position and direction as necessary, swim elementary back stroke for 15 yards then exit the water.  All skills performed independently.

Level 4.  Headfirst entry into deep water, swim front crawl for 25 yards, change direction / position as needed and swim elementary back stroke for 25 yards.  Swim breaststroke for 15 yards, change direction / position as needed and swim back crawl stroke for 15 yards. Submerge and swim a distance of 3 to 5 body lengths underwater water, return to surface then exit the water. Skills performed independently.

Level 5.  Perform shallow angle dive into deep water, swim front crawl for 50 yards, elementary backstroke 50 yards. Swim breaststroke for 25 yards,change direction and swim back crawl stoke for 25 yards. Skills must demonstrate appropriate and efficient turning styles throughout.

Level 6.  Swim 500 yards continuously using any 3 strokes of choice, swimming at least a minimum of 50 yards of each stroke.

Adult Classes

Level 1A:  Jump into chest deep water, roll front front to back, bobs, rotary breathing, front glides, survival float for 30 seconds, sombined arm/leg action on front/back, modified breaststroke.

 

Level 2A:  change from vertical to horizontal position and front to back position, tread water for 1 minute, back glides, elementary backstroke and scissor kick.

 

Level 3A:  Jump into deep water, rotary breathing, feet first and pike surface die, tread water with only legs, front crawl, breaststroke and elementary backstroke for 50 yards, back crawl, sidestroke and butterfly for 25 yards.

 

Adult classes can be taught to specific needs and levels.
