Food Services

Why are meals no longer free?

Over the last two years, the federal government allowed all students to eat free regardless of learning environment or family financial situation.  However, beginning on the first day of school, August 18, 2022, students will be charged for both breakfast and lunch unless they qualify for free or reduced price meals.

Do I need to submit a free and reduced price meal application for next school year?

Yes, applications will be available July 1.

I don’t qualify for free or reduced price meals.  Do I need to do anything?

If you do not believe you qualify for free or reduced price meals, please make sure that there is money n your student’s account.  You can add money to their account at

If I do not submit a free and reduced application prior to the first day of school and/or if my student does not have money in their account, what will happen?

In CMSD12 we never take meals away from students.  If you have not submitted an application and do not have money in your student’s account, your student will be allowed to charge meals into the negative on their account.  Families are responsible for paying outstanding balances.

You may have noticed some last-minute changes to our menus.  Our school nutrition program is currently experiencing supply chain issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Like many industries, food manufacturers and distributors are struggling with labor shortages to produce and transport food. As a result, we are having trouble receiving ingredients from our food suppliers.  This is a nationwide problem, but we are working on strategies to minimize the impact on ur students.  We are working closely with our distributors and manufacturers to secure both the food and supplies needed to support our school nutrition program.

While we intend to serve the posted menu each day at every school, it may not be possible until supply chain issues are resolved.  We will always attempt to substitute the scheduled menu item with another that is as similar as possible to the extent we are able to do so.

We apologize to students who are experiencing last-minute menu changes.  As we navigate this challenging time, we appreciate your patience and understanding.  Our school nutrition team is committed to provide wholesome meals to you child each day.
