LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS

Definition

Multilingual Learners in Cheyenne Mountain School District are students who have a home language other than English and who would benefit academically from services that specifically address English Language Development (ELD). These students may have spoken English from birth or they may be new to the English language. They qualify as Multilingual Learners due to the differences in their language learning, or due to the difference in their home language environment.

Identification

Multilingual Learners are students who have been identified with a Home Language Survey completed by their parents or guardians at registration. The district uses assessments designed for Native English speakers. Students are assessed for language proficiency in both social and academic English to include Speaking and Listening, and Reading and Writing.

Programming

The individual challenges of each Multilingual Learner are considered in the variety of services offered. These services may be delivered through the general education teacher, English Language Development (ELD) teachers, reading specialists, learning specialists and other qualified staff. Services are provided in each school by a qualified ELD teacher.
